Welcome to Salida Middle School

July 26, 2021

Dear Middle School Families, Parents, and Students,

Let me first say thank you to every family that navigated through the 2020-21 school year. It was a challenge both at school and at home and I appreciate everyone’s efforts and commitment last year. Well done!

I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable summer and that you are as excited as I am about returning to school in person, later this month. It is hard to believe that summer is over, but we have great things in store for every student here this fall.

I will ask that you take some time to carefully look through this letter.  Please pay close attention to the registration times and dates as we are trying to maximize efficiencies with that process. It is important to check the enclosed documents and correct phone numbers and email as communication is vital to a meaningful school-to-home relationship. Kindly check all pages for accuracy.

The building and grounds look terrific and you will notice improvements both inside and out here at SMS.

In continuing to support current health guidelines for staff and student safety I will highly encourage all eligible students, parents and other adults to get vaccinated prior to school beginning. Being vaccinated is NOT mandatory, but it is highly advised and will benefit both you individually as well as those around you. If you have questions about the vaccine or how to access the vaccine, please contact our school nurse at 719-530-5316 or the Chaffee County Public Health Department at 719-539-6627.

The CDC and County mask wearing guidelines are changing to address community health concerns. This is and will continue to be a dynamic public health situation which will create the need for flexibility and quick response by all of us. Please plan on having a mask available for your student to wear while at school. If masks are required, we will wear them. And, if we do not have to wear masks, we will not.

You will get additional information about COVID related protocols from the district soon. The purpose for this is simply consistency in messaging and ensuring the safest environment for all of us to work and learn in. Please note, at SMS:

Our HVAC units have been updated with HEPA type filters and the air flow in the building has been increased to filter the entire building air supply every 10-12 minutes.
All students and staff will continue to use hand sanitizer to prevent the spread of germs and viruses, and
Students will enter the building through their grade level doors as all students have a core/academic class, period 1, each day (just like last year).

REGISTRATION - Please bring your COMPLETED paperwork (mailed to most recent address in IC) and fees to school on the assigned time and date. Registration will be held in the middle school commons/lunchroom area.
  • 5th Grade on August 9th from 8:00-12:00

  • 6th Grade on August 9th from 1:00-4:00

  • 7th Grade on August 10th from 8:00-12:00

  • 8th Grade on August 10th from 1:00-4:00

Students who can not make it on the above assigned times may come on Thursday, August 12th from 8:00-12:00

So, when do I start school?

Our 5th-grade students will have a half-day of school on FRIDAY AUGUST 13. Students will enter through the south, 5th-grade entrance at 7:50 and will attend classes and orientation activities until 12:00. This day is designed to get our 5th graders acquainted with the building, their teachers and allows all of us to begin to build relationships with our newest SMS family members. Lunch will be served for 5th graders that day. All students will attend school

MONDAY AUGUST 16 (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders). Just as we did last year, students will enter the building through their grade level doors by their classroom. All students have a core academic class during period 1, so entry and travel time should not be an issue. Doors will open at 7:50 and class begins at 8:00 each day. School is dismissed at 4:00 PM.

Being on time is always important, especially during these first days of school. Students who arrive late will need to enter the building through the front main door. So, please be on time!

As you know, the first few days of school are crucial for goal and expectation setting in classrooms as well as for orientation and relationship building between all students and staff. We are all excited to get to know and support your students and ask that you make every effort to have them to school on time every day.

I realize having a middle-school-aged child can be a challenge. Middle school can be harder on parents than it is on kids. Additionally, middle school is a time of great change, independence as well as physical and emotional growth. Please know that everyone here at SMS is wanting to support your child and you as parents in the best way possible. Feel free to reach out to any of us if and when a time arises when you need assistance/support, have questions, or need clarification about anything.

Thanks for being a part of the Salida Middle School Family, and welcome.
